Pan areas at a glance
| Pan | Approx. area |
|---|---|
| 8-inch round | 50 sq in |
| 9-inch round | 64 sq in |
| 10-inch round | 79 sq in |
| 8-inch square | 64 sq in |
| 9-inch square | 81 sq in |
| 9 × 13-inch rectangle | 117 sq in |
| 9 × 5-inch loaf | 45 sq in |
| 13 × 18-inch half sheet | 234 sq in |
Areas are measured across the bottom of the pan. A 9-inch round and an 8-inch square hold about the same area, and two 9-inch rounds come close to one 9 × 13-inch pan.
What this converter does not change
- Baking time: a thinner layer usually bakes faster and a deeper one slower. Start checking early and rely on the doneness signs in the recipe.
- Depth: the comparison assumes both pans have similar sides. Fill cake pans no more than about two-thirds full.
- Special shapes: Bundt, tube and springform pans with tall sides are best compared by volume, not by area.
